Pastoral Conservation

There is no denying it: nowadays the gap between progressive and conservative people is bigger than ever. Whether in the US, the UK or Europe, election results show a significant difference between the voting behaviour of urban and rural areas.

The city has traditionally been progressive and the countryside rather conservative. Yet rural areas are increasingly attracting the urban elite. They see the countryside as a metaphor for a slower, simpler life, the place to fully enjoy a "slow life" with attention to quality of life. This desire for the countryside is the driver of a trend such as cottagecore, which rather nostalgically reverts to the aesthetics of a farmer’s life.

However, we do not see it so straightforward. Rural elements can perfectly go hand in hand with a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic. Natural materials such as ceramics, lime plaster, wood and stone give the interior an ecological touch, but the sober forms are resolutely contemporary. The materials retain their own colours or are given subtle shades, inspired by the rural landscape.
